Kitchen Remodeling | How To Design the Perfect Kitchen Island

Kitchen islands are a great addition to any kitchen remodeling project. They are functional, versatile, and can give extra counter and storage space; however, kitchen islands aren’t right for every kitchen, and before you add one to your kitchen, there are a few things you need to know.

1. Enough Space? You need a space that is at least eight feet by twelve feet to accommodate a kitchen island with forty-two inches around the island on all sides. Don’t try to squeeze an island into a space that is too small; otherwise, you might not be able to open your appliances or doors the right way.

2. Seating Options- Sitting at the kitchen island is great for grabbing a quick bite to eat, but you’ll need to decide how much seating you want. Some islands can accommodate seating all the way around with fewer cabinets underneath. Others have bar stools on just one side, and some homeowners decide to install a breakfast bar with seating rather than put stools at the island to save space in the middle of the kitchen.

3. Storage Needs- There are a few different storage designs for kitchen islands. Some people choose the open farmhouse style island while others enjoy having drawers and cabinets to hide their odds and ends behind. Other options for storage include hooks that you can hang pots and pans from. Hanging storage can also be installed above the kitchen island.

4. Functionality- Choosing a cooktop surface or sink for your kitchen island during kitchen remodeling increases the functionality of your island while freeing up your counter space. You can choose a full-size sink or a simple prep sink if you do a lot of cooking. Whether you need to use your kitchen island for making food or extra space to do homework, make sure your island is functional!
